JERUSALEM - On Thursday, March 4, 2010, 18 senior Arab and Jewish officials and decision-makers in Galilee local governments will attend the first session of a mediation course sponsored by The Abraham Fund Initiatives, in conjunction with the Ministry of the Interior’s Mafam Galil Maaravi Training Center and the Carmiel Community Mediation Center.
The course is part of the Mirkam in the Galilee Initiative, which works toward creating a regional model for Jewish-Arab equality and co-existence in the central Galilee.
The course is designed to equip senior officials with skills and tools for regional-level conflict management, including conflict management between Jews and Arabs. The course also aims to establish a forum where officials in adjacent local municipalities will meet regularly to promote inter-municipal and regional projects and collaboration. Among other issues, course participants will also deal with some of the current relevant matters that relate to the connection between Jewish and Arab municipalities in the Galilee.
Upon completing the 60-hour course, participants will receive certification from the Gevim Mediation Center, as mediators, recognized by Israel’s legal system. Course instructors are Attorney Basam Hamadan and Attorney Gilad Levy, both experienced mediators. Classes will be held at the Department of Social Services at Carmiel Municipality and at the offices of the participating local councils.
Co-Executive Directors of The Abraham Fund Initiatives, Mohammad Darawshe and Amnon Be’eri-Sulitzeanu, say that they hope that mediation skills will help create a win-win situation for the local governments, based on inter-dependence. “Genuine quality of life in the Galilee depends on a sense of well-being and belonging for all the region’s residents,” they stated.
Course participants include: Abas Titi, Head of Bana Local Government Mahmoud Boaki, Head of Sha’ab Local Government Attorney Nasוr Snalla, Head of Dir-Alasad Local Government Oren Milstein, Deputy Mayor of Carmiel Municipality Shlomo Geva, Legal Advisor of Carmiel Municipality David Rodder, Engineer of Mateh-Asher Regional Council Kamal Nakhly, Deputy Head of Rama Local Government Alex Korniev, Auditor of Maalot-Tarshiha Municipality Ruthi Brigga, Director of the Carmiel Employment Bureau Yunis Salih, member of the Koakab Abu Al-Hija Local Council
