Minority Mainstreaming in the Media

Research shows that only 2% of media coverage in Israel discusses Arab citizens; a majority of this coverage pertains to violence, crime, and terrorism, as opposed to issues of welfare, housing, and education. The general delegitimization of the Arabic language in the public sphere negatively impacts minority-majority relations in Israel, exacerbating Arab citizens’’ distrust in the Hebrew language media.

In order to increase the exposure of minority issues in the media, the Abraham Fund Initiatives has taken a number of steps to increase mainstream access to issues facing Arab citizens. The Abraham Fund Initiatives organizes spoken Arabic courses and study tours for Hebrew language journalists. Each month, translated media updates of the top stories in the Arabic press are sent out, reaching top decision makers in Israel.
