Ivrit B'Salam - Spoken Hebrew

While recent studies showed that although more than 90% of Arab students in Israel consider Hebrew fluency important to their future, the Israeli Authority for Measurement and Evaluation in Education found that Hebrew Language ability was under par. Although Arabic is an official language of the State of Israel, Hebrew remains by far the most dominant language, and proficiency is essential for gainful employment, and access to education and government services.

The “Spoken Hebrew” program was piloted during the 2014-15 school year, following an extensive mapping that identified school and student competencies. Jewish teachers with native-tongue Hebrew skills are recruited, trained, and placed in Arab schools throughout Israel where they implement the curriculum developed specifically to improve spoken language skills and cultural competency. Advocacy efforts have succeeded in obtaining financing for teacher hours from the Ministry of Education, and continues its work to ensure that Arab students across Israel receive high quality Hebrew language education by implementing the program nationally through the Ministry of Education.
